A Happy Thanksgiving

We had - once again - an amazing & fabulous Thanksgiving celebration! It's become tradition to have a big breakfast together (with many of us still in our pj's). We had a houseful of people - all the kids, my dad and Doug's Aunt Carol and Uncle Dave from Phoenix. Our little house was overflowing - with people, with pets & with love!
Being the east coast girl that I am, the Macy's Day parade is a staple of Thanksgiving - right up there with the turkey, stuffing & gravy! I can still remember going to the parade in person with my dad & my pop-pop (my moms' dad) when I was little. It's one of my only memories of my pop-pop so watching the parade connects me a little bit to him. I am trying to instill this tradition into my girls - and hte Sesame Street float got them hooked (at least for a few minutes!)
Because all four of our children were around and awake at the same time, I was a bit insistent that we try to get some families pictures. One day - I WILL get one picture of all six of us looking at the camera, smiling with normal poses - until then..here are some takes & out-takes!

Aunt Carol is Doug's moms sister. Doug's mom (Margey) went to be with Jesus in 2000 so I never met here. However, everyone in his family tells me if I've met Aunt Carol, I've come pretty close to meeting Margey! We had the absolute best time with them - they loved on the girls, helped around the kitchen & the house and really made our Thanksgiving complete this year. We're holding a room reservation for them for next Thanksgiving!
The "Tucker" side of this Yingling family - it was almost like having Margey here with us. What a very special day
My theory on the Turkey is "more is better" - so even though we only had 15 people, we had a 22.5 pound bird. My cooking process starts Tuesday night with an overnight brine, all day drying from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, then a quick 3 hour high heat start roast. I develop quite a relationship with my bird by then - and yes, it tasted as good as it looks (and after the soup for Saturday night's party and two meals of leftovers, it's gone already!).
Our friend Kris brought the bread - there just aren't words for this....
Katie's first official Thanksgiving meal - she loved it!
Our neighbors Art & Linda joined as as well...Art's missing from this picture as he was busy in the kitchen cleaning up. We really do have the best neighbors around!
The Sanchez side of our family stopped by for snacks in the early afternoon. We actually had all of their kids and all of our kids in the same place, dressed nice and cooperative (sort of!) - a little bit more to be thankful for!

It was such a special Thanksgiving. Having Katie here with us filled my heart so much. Of all the things we have been blessed with this year, of all the gifts the Lord has given us, of all the good things that happened - I am the most thankful that the Lord has brought our family together. That He chose us to be her family and that He brought her to us. That He delivered her from that place in China into our arms. Thankful that His redeeming love is transforming her every day into this precious beautiful little girl!

I am thankful for.....

  • My baby Becky who has a quick wit, a charming smile and a spicy outlook on life
  • My precious Katie, with her huge heart, her forgiving nature and her big smile
  • Matt's easy going nature, his sensitive spirit and his humble nature
  • Ashlee's love for the Lord, her family and her friends
  • My husband's unfailing faithfulness to God's call on our lives, his leadership of our household and his sense of humor
  • The abundant provisions in our lives - our home, Doug's job, our friends
  • The power of prayer
  • The protection Matt received last Wednesday in his skateboarding accident
The list could go on for miles. As I sat to compose all that I am thankful for this year, the blessings - even through some trials - have been overflowing. The common thread is that none of these blessings are through our own making or efforts - they have all been provided through the grace & goodness and mercy of our Father in heaven. Even the trials have been blessings as they have drawn us close to Him.

The original Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims following the winter of 1620 - after a 65 days journey across the Atlantic Ocean in the cargo hold of a ship, a landing error of 500 miles and a death toll of 50% of their population after they landed. SOMe had wanted a day of mourning; instead Governor Bradford instructed them to set aside a day to give thanks to the Lord.

So we give thanks today - for all the blessings the Lord has bestowed on us.

Reflections on a birthday

Now that a few days have past, I can try to write about Katie's first birthday with us. Not just report the facts and post the pictures, but write about what it meant.

Dear Katie,
There are so many things I want to be able to tell you as we celebrate your 5th birthday. My heart breaks for all that you have missed your first 4 years - the parties you didn't have, the gifts you never got, the missing birthday cakes and decorations. Mostly, my heart breaks for you not understanding or knowing that you are so valuable and special that there is a day set aside just for you. That you deserve all the special attention on this day. That you are worthy - so worthy of being loved.

Katie - you are so worthy of being loved. You are the most precious daughter of the King. You are wonderfully and fearfully created by Him for His purposes. We are so blessed that He has entrusted you to us. Our lives are made richer every day by your laughter, the joy that you find in so many things - seeing the moon during the day, hearing the airplanes flying overhead, when your daddy coming home from work.  You remind us that life is not one giant step but a series of small steps - and sometimes the path is not straight but it is always guided by God.

Watching you enjoy being celebrated brought more joy to us than we could have possibly imagined. Seeing you realize that you matter to people lifted out hearts and for a moment, we saw up close and personal the redeeming power of God 's love. We got to peak behind the curtain of heaven and it was breath taking.

Katie, we are so blessed that God brought you into our life. We can not imagine what our life would be without you; you complete our family and we love you to pieces.

Happy Birthday Dear Katie

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday dear Katie
Happy Birthday to you!!!!!!
Today we celebrated Katie's 5th birthday! We had a family party with all of her favorite folks! Katie got lots of lovely gifts - and she was seriously appreciative of all of them. She was so excited that all these wonderful pretty packages were for her.....
Grandma and grandpa got her a new trampoline that she loves

Every new article of clothing she would insist on putting on right away -
My grandmother's birthday is tomorrow - so we had a joint celebration for them - two birthdays 80 years and one day apart -

Becky felt the need to help Katie open the present she gave her...and then Becky promptly took it from her and went off to play with it! Fortunately, there were a lot of other things to keep the birthday girl occupied!

Tia Annie was the hero of the evening..she sent a princess present for the non birthday girl!

Katie had an amazing birthday - thanks to all who came & celebrated with us!

Birthday Bash

Today Katie had what was probably her first birthday party. We invited her Lucky Mommy friends and some of her classmates. My friend Paula described it better than I ever could:

It was such a memorable party! The look on Katie's face as we sang happy birthday to her and when she opened her presents was PRICELESS! I teared up just thinking was a blessing she is! My, how things have changed for your little princess in the last year! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Beginnings of a Special Day

On Sunday, we will celebrate Katie's 5th birthday. I've been planning her celebrations for a little while now - nothing really spectacular, just the standard fare. Cupcakes at school on Friday, her kids pizza party at the house on Saturday and her family celebration on Sunday. It's been fun to plan, and we are excited. What I did not expect was how emotional I would be when it finally got here. While she was in school on Friday, her first birthday card came in the mail from my Aunt Karen & Uncle Terry. All of a sudden all the emotion surrounding this birthday hit me. Like a freight train.
Wondering what her first two birthdays were like.
Wondering what her next two birthdays in the orphanage were like.
Amazed at home much has changed for her since her last birthday.
Overwhelmed by how many people love her.
Blessed by those who are making her life better.
At school, they did her birthday cupcakes. Each of her classmates also colored a birthday card for her (those made me cry too)

When I picked her up - she was wearing her birthday crown. She wore it all day, wanted to wear it in the bath & to bed - and put it on again first thing this morning.

What a great weekend this will be for her - receiving for maybe the first time in her little life that she is so special, so precious & so loved.

It's Beginning....

On Wednesday, Tanya, Paula and I met for a quick Disneyland fix. Becky and I got there early, so we went to Jazz Kitchen for some beignets - she LOVED them (or at least loved the powdered sugar on them!)
We did the standard rides; Becky's new favorite is the teacups

Then it happened...we went on "it's a Small World"...which is decorated for Christmas. The lights, the scents, the songs......
We saw the big guy - and liked him this year.....
We saw his wife.....
Pluto's a reindeer.....
I am in the spirit - bring it on!
