The Grand Finale

The Grande Finale post from China - otherwise known as
"How to pass 36 hours waiting to leave"

A mostly pictorial essay - because I am pretty much out of words. Exhausted from hearing myself think and talk. Ready to go home -

After the anti-climatic consulate appointment, we are done with official paperwork and appointments. Now we sit around and wait for the US Consulate to issue Julia's visa. So from 10 am Monday until 4:30 pm Tuesday, we had time to kill. No shopping on the agenda - it's too stressful on everyone so we ventured across the street to the Yuexei Park for some exercise and a change of scenery!

Because it was so hot, we spent Monday afternoon in the pool!

That program worked so well on Monday we simply repeated it on Tuesday! We were all ready to go home - really, really ready - so introducing anything more stressful than a walk in the park threatened to put someone (mainly me) right over the edge!

Turns out - this park has the famous 5 Ram Statue in it!

Turns out I have been there before!

I think this trip has been really good for Becky. I think it will help her process her own adoption - and although her story is very different from Cami and Julie's, see thing the process will help fill in some of her "blanks".

And…back to the pool! We got in the habit of swimming in the later afternoon and just ordering heavy snacks poolside for dinner - one last time!

 A beautiful Becky selfie…...

Next up…..leaving on a jet plane!

My Heart

We have been gone 12 days.

I have been away from my home and part of my family.

My heart is here in China watching three girls become family.

My heart is home right now - with these people.
My heart is in pieces spread out across an ocean.

I hate being away from Katie this long. She hates it. It's hard that the there are things that are just better for her not to do - like spend 12 days in China.

So I love that God orchestrated things so that she got to be the first auntie to hold baby Averee. She got to be the first to love on her - it sure made her feel special!

And as much as I love my kids and grandkids and hate when we are apart - I really hate being away from Doug this long. I am glad that he had this moment  - but I sure wish that one day - he and I can share the first hospital hold of a grand baby together!
We had our last appointment today - the long, boring and tedious and very anti-climatic consulate appointment.

Tomorrow afternoon - we get Julia Xioa Bai's passport back with her US Visa - and get on a plane to come home.

My heart will be whole again.

Holy Family of God

Even though there is no adoption related reason to go to Shamain Island anymore, for us there will always be a reason.

It's not Lucy's - although they do make a killer grilled cheese sandwich.

It's not the shopping - although I love Jenny's place and she always remembers me - or at least pretends that she does.

It's the Sunday morning worship at the Shamain Christ Church.

It's the place where each of our girls has first worshiped as a Yingling.

Becky in May of 2008
Katie in February of 2010 (yes - that was an "interesting" church service…)
 Cami in December of 2011
And now Julia XiaoBai!

Clearly - this place hold a special spot in my heart - the worship is authentic and real and spirit inspired, and the message is always Christ centered and about this time on the trip - I NEED the Word of God washed over my soul.

But now it is more special - because we have friends there!

While each time before, it was my daughter's first time at Christ Church Shamain - this time, not so much! We hadn't even gotten into the sanctuary - and Julia Xiao Bai was hugging someone she clearly knew (as opposed to hugging a complete stranger - which she is want to do now and again….)
I had expected to meet one of Joy's friends there, and have lunch with her - and instead there was a whole pile of Xiao Bai cheerleaders!

These ladies apparently are her personal prayer team! They just loved on her - and she loved the attention and the love!
What a wonderful welcome we received!

As we have walked this adoption road over the past 7 years, Guangzhou and China have become more and more woven into the fabric of our lives through our children's history - as part of their birth culture and beginnings.

This trip - its becoming more about us weaving into the fabric of what is happening here.

We have friends here.

People whose ministries we support - and that we can pray for.

Friends who prayed for and watched over our children before they came to us.

Part of our family - woven together by the Holy spirit of Christ. Truly brothers and sisters united by a heavenly Father - for whom these relationship are not an accident and are well pleasing to Him.

Oh How we grow…and grow!!!!

What happens when I leave for China?
There is no easy or quiet way to say this - but I am a grandma once again!!!!!
Our boy is a dad -
To one very, very beautiful Averee Elizabeth!
God's blessing
The path to this baby wasn't predicted or planned.
It wasn't our best plan for Matt and Laurel (beautiful Laurel who is about the sweetest daughter-in-love anyone could ask for)
But Averee Elizabeth is a gift from God - proof that He loves us and wants great things for us and wraps them up in perfect pink!
Welcome to the world baby Avereee - you are loved by mommy and daddy and your sissy and NiNi and Grandpa and your aunties more than can ever imagine
But you are loved by Creator God and Abba Father more than that!!

Sheltered

One of the hardest parts of the adoption process is the time between finding a child and getting that child.
Your child - the one that God has written into your momma heart - is thousands of miles away.
You can't hold them or take care of them or protect them or be their momma. The job that God gave you to do - you can't do it.
Naturally - you also fret about all the time up till this point. Before you even knew about this child.
For many of our China adopted children, the answers make us sad - because there has been no one. Or not one that would measure up to our standards.

But for two of our girls - it was different.
For them, God sheltered them beneath His wings using some rather extraordinary people who poured into our kids.
We are exceptionally blessed because not only where they cared for - we are able to have a relationship with these people today.

Julia Xiao Bai lived with Melissa from almost the day she came to the SWI - and was with her until last November. Those years she was with Melissa she was valued and loved and cared for. She also learned to love Jesus.
Melissa and her family made a three hour journey (one way) to share lunch with us yesterday. This connection is so very important to Julia Xiao Bai - and we are blessed that we are able to maintain the relationship.
She has a mom before me who prepared her and took care of her - what a blessing from God. Truly sheltered.
Cami was also immensely blessed. She had a foster mom that we got to spend time with earlier in our trip. There was also an orphanage director who took notice and extra care of her.

But more than that - there were two women who took notice of a little girl who needed more help than the SWI could provide - and they came along side of her and got her some badly needed medical care in 2008. They made arrangements for her to receive 6 months of care in Hong Kong - and covered her while she was there.

They love her - and today they came to see us and spend some time with us,
Agnes, Mde Zhong and Brenda sheltered Cami. They extended themselves in ways that they didn't need to and at risk to themselves to help her and love her and make her feel loved and valuable and wanted.
They were her dream team. They are her biggest cheerleaders. They sheltered her.

There are not words to fully explain the magnitude of what these relationships mean to our girls.

I don't even know where to take the emotions that come from seeing these relationships in person, and knowing that we can stay connected.

It's God's Holy and divine intervention.

His promise that every single child matters to Him, and while we may not always see or know how He shelters them - we can be assured that He does.

You have been a refuge for the poor,
a refuge for the needy in their distress,
a shelter from the storm
and a shade from the heat.

I also learned some hard things about the behind the scenes at the orphanages. Like the hospital won't take kids that might die. So there is a room for them. And at most places, there is no hope or help or effort to save them.
Cami was in one of those rooms. But there was hope - because Madame Zhong had a nanny in that room. And that nanny was very, very good at what she did. And kids lived because of her. In July - at Cami's orphanage, there were 17 babies in that room.
Praying for those babies to be held in the shelter of God's wings tonight. That He would reach down and protect them and give Ai Lian the knowledge and the wisdom she needs to care for them.
Praising Him for the woman in that room that saved my girls life - and that she would be blessed beyond measure for her heart.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Sheltered. We are all sheltered.
