Ordinary People

Within the past week or so, several people have made comments along the lines of "well, Christians don't act very Christian" or "most Christians don't act like Christ". At first glance, I might have agreed with them - but quite frankly, these comments have really started to bother me. See, there are a few Christians who have made headlines "in the name of Jesus" committing very bad acts - acts most (almost all) Christians condemn. There is a "church" in Kansas whose web address makes me sick "godhatesXXX.org". And on most days, I can point to at least one dozen things I have done that aren't very Christ like - and that's before breakfast. But here's the thing - there's so much that is going on that is exactly what Christ would have us do - but no one is talking about it.

See, Jesus told us "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" so we are commanded to do our deeds humbly and quietly. Dilemma - in order to change the way people see Christians behavior, we have to talk about what we are doing - which Jesus told us not to do.

At the risk of being un-Christian and doing what Jesus told me not to do - I am going to tell a little bit about some ordinary people. This weekend, our church" left the building" - no services, but 2000 ordinary people doing service in the community - cleaning classrooms in schools where we can't mention Jesus, washing police cars, doing a "extreme home makeover" for a family, and collecting 5-6 tons of food for the local food banks. There's Adeye, an ordinary mom who just got home with her two newest daughters, adopted from the Ukraine - both with Down's syndrome - the five year old has lived her entire life in a crib has a heart condition that will require surgery and weighs 16 pounds. There's Lorraine, whose daughter adopted from Serbia has been in the PICU for 28 days - she posts often about how the Lord is blessing her and how her daughter will be a testimony to Him - no matter the outcome. There are my MOPs moms who brought us dinner for two weeks when I got home from China with Katie. The relief efforts that are still ongoing in New Orleans are almost all church based - and in Haiti, it was the church that was the first on the ground with help. The 17 year old heading to China for 3 weeks to volunteer in an orphanage.

There's not a book big enough to hold all the way that ordinary Christians make this world a better place. We aren't perfect and there are plenty of ways we mess it up every day - but that's the whole point of needing our Savior.

Next time someone comments how Christians don't act like Christians, I am going to pray that their eyes would be open to the abundance of ways that Christ lives here with us through these ordinary people doing what they have been called to do.

A Love Letter

Dear Ashlee,

Today you celebrate a huge milestone - your 21st birthday. I wasn't there when you were born, but I am so happy I have been there to watch you be "born again" in Christ. While I should probably write this from your dad & I, since it's my blog I get to do what I want - and he can write his own love letter to you - this one's just from me. There are so many things I love about you - your generosity, your sweet spirit, your passion (ok - drama!!), but mostly, I love how you love Jesus.

Almost 10 years ago, I came crashing into your life & your territory with your dad. Up till then, you had him all to yourself for a while - and that was good for you - very good! I came into your life at a time that there were a lot of other changes happening - yet you handled my presence with the maturity of someone much older. Not only did you willingly share your dad with me, but you would go on to share him with two more little sisters - not always easy. You give fully of yourself to those in you life - you give your time, your heart, your things.

You are generous with you love for those your love - you have a sweet spirit of giving and forgiving. I marvel at how easily you overlook the hurts when people you care about wound you. I am amazed at how you never hold a grudge, but hold onto the best things about everyone.

You fill our house - with laughter, with stuff and with surprises. You are passionate about what you care about, what you believe in and just about everything else. There is never a doubt about where you stand on anything - from politics to religion to what I am wearing. Your honesty has saved me from many a fashion faux pax and I am grateful!

I love how you love Jesus. It fills my heart to see you walking with Him at this point in your life. The past year has been such a blessing for me to see Him in action in your life - to watch your struggle with true obedience, true repentance and true surrender and to see you emerge victorious for the Lord.

I can not begin to tell you how grateful I am for your presence in our lives and my home. I am convinced that without your help, I might have totally lost my mind especially these past three months. Your willingness to love your sisters and help with them has been a true answer to prayer. I love how you love my daughters - and they are so blessed to have you for a big sister - never a better one anywhere!

Lest you think you are perfect...I still have to re-wash every egg pan you use, your closet might be declared a federal disaster area and about your car......But I wouldn't trade what makes me crazy about you for what I love about you.

As you turn this corner of your life, my pray for you is that you will know how truly loved you are - here on earth and even more so in heaven. That you will claim your birthright as a daughter of the King and that you will walk with Him all the days of your life.

Love-
Karen

Lipstick Days

Perhaps the biggest indicator of how my life has changed in the past 24 months can be found in my lip gloss tube. It's the same one that I bought for Christmas 2007 (and yes - I know you're not supposed to keep any makeup that long - it's the least of my issues right now!) You see - putting on lipstick these days is reserved for those very special occasions when I am going to be with grown ups in a grown up setting. I'm not talking play dates here - I'm talking gatherings that do not include juice boxes and bubbles made from soap - but bubbles from grapes.
This past week - I've had to break out that poor old tube of lip gloss a bunch of times!!
The first was last WEdnesday night when we celebrated my dear friend Karen's ^& birthday. Karen prayed my children home from China. She is the role model of hte mom I would love to be - truly spirit filled and God led and prayerful and to boot - she's really fun! It was a GREAT night - her husband did an awesome job with the party - and we had all our prayer warrior together for the first time in a long time ...
The very next day...out came the tube again when we went to lunch to celebrate Helen's birthday! We truly were celebrating this day - Helen gave us all quite a scare recently landing in the hospital with some major heart issues. Praises to the Great Physician for her healing and her birthday!
Friday, right after the Special Games, I jumped on a plane to Chicago for the First Holy Communion of my Godson, Tal. Definitely a lipstick moment - and tissue moment too. There is something that is pretty amazing to watch a young child take the elements for hte first time, after truly learning about what it means. Tal's statement of belief was "I believe that Jesus is the way to God" - AMEN!!!
(Tal is the little head all the way on the right side wearing the blue tie)

Tal's sister FIna - and one of Becky's best friends
momma and baby Bea - who really is as cute in person as she looks in this picture!
Momma and the GOdmothers - Elaine is the reason I had to break out hte lipstick - she always looks this good and this well put together!
So as if the Special Games , a flight to Chicago and a First Holy Communion mass wasn't enough in 24 hours...both Tal and his brother Quinn (shown here) had a guitar recital in the afternoon. We raced to that - then back to the airport.
Tal - my perfect Godson - chose "Take me out to the Ballgame" for his song - love that kid!
So I flew home Saturday night to be home for Mother's Day and Katie's dedication - yet another lipstick moment! It was so wonderful - not just because of the obvious reason of publicly declaring our intention to raise Katie to know Jesus as her Savior, but because of very dear friends Craig & Lisa dedicated their daughter Audrey as well. Audrey is 8 years old and came home from China a week after Katie did.

All in all - a lot of lip gloss was applied the past 4 days - if this keeps up, it might be time to invest in another tube!

Special Games

Last Friday, Katie had her first field trip. Her class along with the other special ed classes participated in the Orange County Special Games - a day devoted to encouraging special needs athletes. It was held at Cal State Fullerton - and there were hundreds of volunteers there to help the kids. Each child was assigned one (or more) high school students to escort them around and the college kids ran the games. Carls Jr donated the lunches - and it was an awesome day. I almost missed it because I was intending to be on a 8 am flight to Chicago for my Godson's Holy Communion on Saturday, but thankfully was able to switch my flight till later in the day.
Katie and her friend Nicky waiting with Miss Francine for the bus.
Katie and her entourage!
we were very lucky that Uncle Ken was here for the day and got to join us at the games
They started the games by playing soccer

Katie had three Rosary girls assigned to her - all very cute, so it's no wonder we shortly thereafter picked up a couple of boys....
met the Fullerton College mascot
she ran a race - with coach Uncle Ken giving her some last minute instructions

did the ring toss and won a little prize

played some catch with her new friends

ran another race
containment of Katie was best had sitting down - as her new friends soon discovered!
shot some hoops
played a little baseball
It was a great morning - and a special thanks to the kids from Rosary High School who spent their day making sure Katie had a good time (ok - they really kept Katie from running off into never never land!)- you guys rock!!!

Princess Parade

While at Disneyland last week, Tanya & I thought it was about time our princesses had some real princess time - so Monday we gathered up Becky & Gracie and headed to Ariel's Grotto for an overpriced and marginal meal (breakfast)....but worth it all because we got to spend some time with some real princesses! (For those who are feeling like Katie got left out - she did this time. She is in school from 8:15-1:30 every day, and right now just needs that time. Plus - Becky needs some special things as she's been struggling again with the adjustment)

The girls were dressed for the occasion - complete with glass slippers for Becky - which she promptly lost almost immediately after breakfast!
Being welcomed by Ariel
A perfectly sized Prince Charming!
Snow White with two dwarfs?
Since Monday, yellow is now Becky's favorite color!
Notice that Becky is no longer wearing her glasses....when Cinderella came over to meet us, Becky took her glasses off and handed them to me before she went to have her picture taken with her!
think this is her favorite :)
How come everyone in the world except me knew that Aurora is actually Sleeping Beauty? Even Becky!
Mommy with her princess (soon to be joined by the prince!)
Post princess dresses - while walking back from the grotto, Becky told me she'd like to take her dress off. I had anticipated that and had her clothes with me, and when I turned down to tell her ok, noticed that the new $25 dollar "glass" slippers" were not on her feet - she had walked through the park barefoot! I ran back & re-traced our steps - but apparently they fit some other princess' feet - and they are gone! Oh well.....
It was, all in all - another great Disney Day!

This morning we had our final MOPs meeting of the year (Mothers of Pre-schoolers). It has been an interesting time for me. I joined for Becky - her Moppetts teacher is my dear friend Mari, and I thought it would be a great way to get her used to be separated from me. I found that I was really there for me - to be stretched a little in who I considered "my peers", to learn from my great mentor mom and to make some new friends.

One of the speakers read this today - it really spoke to me. Too often, I am focused on things other than truly being WITH my children - I am worried about the pile of laundry in the laundry room, the toys strewn about, the dog fur on the floor, what's in my email in box or who's doing what on Facebook! Jesus won't ask me how clean my house was or what others think about me...these moments with my pre-schoolers are so precious...I think I'll go enjoy a few right now!!

1 CORINTHIANS 13 FOR MOTHERS

If I live in a house of spotless beauty with everything in its place, but have not love, I am a housekeeper - not a homemaker.

If I have time for waxing, polishing, and decorative achievements, but have not love, my children learn cleanliness - not godliness.

If I scream at my children for every infraction, and fault them for every mess they make, but have not love, my children become people-pleasers - not obedient children.

Love leaves the dust in search of a child’s laugh. Love smiles at the tiny fingerprints on a newly cleaned window. Love wipes away the tears before it wipes up the spilled milk. Love picks up the child before it picks up the toys.

Love accepts the fact that I am the ever-present “mommy,” the taxi-driver to every childhood event, the counselor when my children fail or are hurt.

Love crawls with the baby, walks with the toddler, and runs with the child, then stands aside to let the youth walk into adulthood.

Before I became a mother I took glory in my house of perfection. Now I glory in God’s perfection of my child. All the projections I had for my house and my children have faded away into insignificance, And what remain are the memories of my kids.

Now there abides in my home scratches on most of the furniture, dishes with missing place settings, and bedroom walls full of stickers, posters and markings, But the greatest of all is the Love that permeates my relationships with my children.
