Becky Does DC

I love to visit Washington, DC. Every time I am here, I am reminded of the powerful beginnings of our nation. Even in this time when it feels like the freedoms and the ideals that founded our country are being forgotten, when I am here, I am reminded that this great nation will endure. This nation is bigger and stronger than the current people in power because it was founded by the grace of God.

We started our morning with a quick trip to see a couple of monuments - but actually only really had time to visit one. Doug hadn't been to the Jefferson Memorial, so we boarded the Old Town Trolley and off we went. It started out drizzly and overcast, but by the time we got down to the tidal basin, the sun was out. The walk from the trolley stop to the monument takes you around the tidal basin and there is a lovely view of the Washington Monument.
On the steps of the Jefferson Memorial - Doug was laughing at me because I am was telling Becky all about Thomas Jefferson and how our country was founded - she's a very smart baby and I know she will retain all of it!

I am standing in the same place taking this picture as the tow previous - it's just 180 degrees the other direction
We are very lucky to be here during the cherry blossom time; the trees bloom their flowers for just about 2 weeks - and in the past three years we have been too late. Although I remember seeing them as a kid, it's been a little while (!!) and I had forgotten how truly pretty they are.

Doug needed to be back by 1:30 to get ready for his meeting, so when we came back to the hotel, Becky wanted to talk to her big sis, so we skyped her! Becky has dialed into skype - and loves seeing people she knows on the computer.
After Doug left, Becky & I embarked on the car rental fiasco (we had a reservation to pick up a car at 3 pm - but the car rental place closes at 2 on Sunday...go figure). We finally got a car, and headed out to Maryland to visit my great Aunt Connie - who is my dad's aunt on his father's side. I hadn't seen Connie since a family wedding, but we got reconnected recently - and it has been wonderful being in touch with her.
Becky had a really nice time & warmed up pretty quickly~
Aunt Connie has a great sunroom that overlooks a creek off the Chesapeake Bay - Becky had a great time looking out hte window for ducks!
Becky with her great-great Aunt Connie - who really is great!

Good night from DC - we're headed the the National Zoo tomorrow to see the Pandas (weather cooperating of course!)

  1. Love the National Zoo! Doug and I went there years ago (like 20) when we were first married and his sister lived just outside of DC.
